Skye Hospital services

It's YOUR NHS

Make your thoughts on health provision in Skye count.

Rhoda Grant is urging residents on the isle to use her consultation to voice their opinions about future of health service delivery in Skye.

NHS Highland made a decision to cut the number of beds available in Skye Hospitals to save money, a move which has been criticised by many locals and generated a lot of debate.

It’s still unclear what the future holds, as the health board also intimated that they intend to look at the future delivery of health services in Skye.

Now the MSPs are asking you to let them know what YOU want from YOUR health service and they’ll make sure NHS Highland hear what you’ve got to say.

 End the Kessock Queues

The Scottish Government must take action to tackle the growing congestion on the Kessock Bridge.

That’s the call from the MSPs as their campaign to end the queues gets underway, already with the backing of people in Ross-shire.  The MSPs will be meeting with Transport Scotland, the Highland Council and HITRANS to the push the issue up the political agenda.

The Kessock Bridge is a key transport route which links the north to Inverness and beyond.  Travelling to and from Easter Ross, the Black Isle and further north has been revolutionised by its existence, but as every year goes past the frustrations of drivers grow with the queues regularly extend back across the bridge.

Amazing, the Kessock Bridge where it meets the roundabout on the Longman Road was not mention in the Road Strategic Transports Projects Review as being an issue, but the congestion on the bridge will only increase if the problem isn’t addressed.

Now you can tell us about your hold ups on the bridge.

Better Broadband

After months of meetings, the Highlands and Islands Labour MSPs and Western Isles Councillor Donald john MacSween have lodged a submission to Ofcom’s ‘Access and Inclusion – Digital communication for all’ consultation.

There’s 4 key action points put forward:

· An explicit recognition now that the market model to secure new services is least likely to deliver for the Islands and wider Highlands.

· The policy mechanism to address the issue needs developed now.

· The Universal Service Commitment for broadband also needs to secure nothing less than 100% coverage, whatever the delivery mechanisms.

· Ofcom needs to work with the UK and Scottish governments and their agencies, local government and with commercial providers to identify the likely investment gap that will need to be filled and commit to finding the mechanisms to deliver."

But you can still play your part by signing our online petition.

You can even leave a short comment on your experiences with Broadband services in the Western Isles.

50 Metre Pool in the new UHI

Work is currently underway in drawing up the plans for the new University of the Highlands and Islands campus in Inverness, included in these plans will be new sports and leisure facilities.

The UHI has always been proud of its community links and in its mission statement it states that it seeks to have a pivotal role in the social infrastructure of the region.

This would be the perfect time to ensure that facilities that will benefit the community as a whole are included in any new building.

There is also a growing interest in improving our fitness generally and to improve the opportunities for talented sportsmen and women to reach their full potential.

With the growing popularity of swimming as both a competitive sport and leisure activity the new UHI building would seem to be an ideal opportunity to provide the extra facilities needed to fulfil these needs.

That is why we are calling for a 50 metre pool to be included in the plans for the new UHI campus.

At present, Scotland has only four 50 metre pools and none of these are further north than Stirling.

This, clearly, disadvantages our talented swimmers. We ask for your support in this venture, for without community support this vital opportunity may be lost.

There is also an on line petition for you to sign. Please encourage all your club members and friends to sign this petition.
